SIGHT WORD SOLDIER PROGRAM

Welcome to the SIGHT WORD SOLDIER Program! This program will be a big part of your child's reading success. Below is a list of 1,000 sight words that we hope your child will make progress towards mastering. We DO NOT expect every child to master all 1,000 words. Every child must work at their own pace by challenging, not frustrating, themselves. We DO expect to see your child's sight word knowledge increase throughout the school year.

At the beginning of the year, we will be assessing each child to determine which list he/she should start. As your child demonstrates mastery of a list, the next list will be sent home for him/her to study. Your little learner will be tested on their list each week. If they show mastery of their list, then they will continue to be tested on the following units until they are unable to continue. So if your child is ready, by all means, work ahead on subsequent lists!

Through this SIGHT WORD SOLDIER Program, each child will earn a dog tag for every 100 sight words they can IMMEDIATELY recognize. Their dog tag chains will be kept in class until the end of the year.

As with all homework, please do not let this become a frustrating activity for your child. If they get frustrated, put the flash cards away and try again, at another time. This should be a pleasant learning experience, rather than an unpleasant chore. Thanks so much for the time you spend with and the support you give to your child!
