DAY
CARE INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT
DEFINITION
Under supervision of the Day Care
Assistant, assists in general supervision and management of a
class of children between the ages of 5 and 12. Assists teacher in
parent conferences and home visits.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may
be assigned.
- Assists in planning and
implementing daily program.
- Assists in planning and preparing
the learning environment and in preparing needed
materials and supplies.
- Helps with general housekeeping
tasks, including the serving of snacks.
- Maintains professional attitudes
and loyalty to day care center.
- Treats all children with dignity
and respect.
- Attends all staff meetings and
recommended training programs.
- Participates in professional
organizations that work for the improvement of early
childhood and primary education.
- Oversees and supervises children in
small groups.
- Maintains student records,
attendance and files.
QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE
Knowledge of:
- General concepts of early childhood
growth and development and child behavior
characteristics.
- Techniques used in controlling and
motivating young children.
- Proper English usage, punctuation,
spelling and grammar.
- Routine record keeping.
- General purposes and goals of early
childhood and primary educations.
- Specific subject area content as
required in job assignment.
Ability to:
- Assume responsibility of
supervising children
- Learn and utilize basic methods and
procedures to be followed in instructional settings.
- Perform routine clerical work and
basic arithmetical calculations.
- Demonstrate an understanding,
patient, warm and receptive attitude toward children.
- Understand and carry out oral and
written instructions.
- Maintain cooperative working
relationships with children, staff, parents, and general
public.
Training and experience:
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Equivalent to completion of twelfth
grade.
- Some paid or volunteer experience
working with preschool and/or primary children.
- In the process of becoming
professionally prepared to be a teacher of young children
and meet the requirements of the licensing agency.
- Must be able to pass a complete
physical examination of a licensed physician, including
verification of freedom from tuberculosis.
- Three to twelve units of ECE Child
Development or Elementary Education preferred.
- Fingerprinting through licensing
required before employment.

Supervising children's active play
