Home Language Survey

REQUIRED FOR CERTAIN K-12 STUDENTS NEW TO THE DISTRICT

When enrolling, if a student in grades K-12 indicates a language other than English on the Home Language Survey portion of the Student Enrollment Information Form, that student must be screened for English language proficiency using the California English Language Development Test (CELDT) identified by the California State Department of Education regulations.  This process is not optional.

Since the results of this screening process for students in grades K-12 provide the staff with information which may indicate the need for English language development assistance, we prefer to conduct the assessment prior to the student’s first day of school.  In this way, we can meet with the parent/guardian accompanying the student and explain the optional programs of assistance available.

If you are transferring into the IUSD from another California public school, you may give us a copy of the student’s official CELDT result from your previous district.   This will enable us to keep accurate and complete records of your student and will excuse the student from having to complete the initial CELDT a second time.

Should you not have a copy of prior CELDT records, upon completion of enrollment, our staff will schedule the student for a screening appointment. The testing process for grades 2-12 can take up to three hours.  Allow one hour for grades K-1. Each student is tested individually and in a group setting.  Results of the assessment will be shared with the parent/guardian. You will leave the session with the documentation necessary to complete the enrollment process at your neighborhood school.

Thank you for your cooperation.
