Mark Sontag - Director: Math, Science, and Technical Education

Mr. Sontag joined the Irvine Unified School District as an intern teacher for the 1977-1978 school year. He spent 20 years teaching middle school science and math at Vista Verde, Lakeside, and Sierra Vista. In 1997, Mr. Sontag was recognized as the Irvine Unified School District Middle School Teacher of the Year. He then spent two years as the Assistant Principal at Sierra Vista Middle School . Mark was selected as Curriculum Coordinator for Math and Science at the beginning of the 2000-2001 school year. He was promoted to Director of Math, Science, and Career Technical Education in July, 2014. In addition to these duties, Mark provides oversight for IUSD’s solar projects and is responsible for managing K-8 textbooks.

During his years as a classroom teacher, Mr. Sontag was able to participate in the district's National Science Foundation grant as a lead teacher, and has had experience implementing programs such as Science Little League, the annual Middle School Career Options Conference, the annual Limestone Canyon Field Trip for IUSD 7th grade students, and EarthKam. Mr. Sontag was also fortunate to work closely with Dr. Dorothy Terman, his predecessor as Curriculum Coordinator.

Mr. Sontag received his undergraduate education at the University of California, Irvine. His Master's Degree in Education is from Azusa Pacific University.
