All students:

Entering 7th Grade - must take the Middle School Math Placement Test.

Entering 8th Grade - must take the Algebra Placement Test.

Current IUSD Students:

Current IUSD 6th and 7th graders will complete their math placement testing in class during school hours under their teacher's supervision. Placement tests are administered in late May and June and results will be available prior to the last day of school.

New Students to IUSD:

Students who are new to IUSD and will be entering either 7th Grade or 8th grade must test for math placement. The tests are held in mid-to-late August before school starts.

PLEASE NOTE: If the testing time falls during your student's middle school orientation time, he/she must attend the math placement test. Please contact the middle school office and arrange to attend orientation at a different time.

MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH PLACEMENT TEST

Any student entering 7th grade in IUSD must take this test.

The test is a combination of multiple choice and open-response items. It is based on California 6th Grade Math Standards, which can be found here.

Receiving below a passing score will place your student in 'Introduction to Pre-Algebra' pending receipt of their 6th Grade Math CST scores in August. If they do not pass the test, but receive a scale score of 490 or above on their CST's, they will be automatically placed in 'Pre-Algebra'.

Achieving a passing score will place your student in 'Pre-Algebra' and will give them the opportunity to take the Algebra Placement Test.

ALGEBRA PLACEMENT TEST

Any student entering 8th grade in IUSD must take this test. Entering 7th grade students who pass the Middle School Math Placement Test may also take this test.

The test is a combination of multiple choice and open-response items. It is based on California 7th Grade Math Standards, which can be found here.

Receiving below a passing score will place your student in 'Transitional Algebra' pending receipt of their 7th Grade Math CST scores in August. If they do not pass the test, but receive a scale score of 490 or above on their CST's and receive  B’s or better during 7th Grade Math’s 3rd Trimester, they will automatically be placed in 'Algebra 1'.

Achieving a passing score will place your student in 'Algebra 1'.

Students who pass the Middle School Math Placement Test and do not pass the Algebra Placement Test will remain in 'Pre-Algebra' for 7th Grade.

PLEASE NOTE: There are NO SECOND CHANCES to take any placement test.

*Passing scores for all tests will be set after grading is completed and will be published at that time. The passing score adjusts each year, but is typically within the 70%-correct range.

Honors Geometry is offered in all of our middle schools in 8th grade.

Honors Geometry is a rigorous high school college prep class where students discover geometric properties by experimentation and observation. Expectations for the Middle School Honors Geometry course mirror the expectations for Honors Geometry at all IUSD high schools.

To take Honors Geometry in 8th grade, students must have taken one full year of Algebra 1 in class and received a grade of B or better on all report cards.

Students will receive a formal grade report approximately every six weeks. To be eligible for Honors Algebra 2 in 9th Grade, students must earn a grade of A each trimester in Honors Geometry and be recommended by their teacher. Students who do not receive a grade of A each trimester may be recommended for either College Prep Algebra 2, a repeat of Honors Geometry, or College Prep Geometry in 9th Grade depending on their grades in Honors Geometry.
