Kindergarten Enrollment
The enrollment process for new Kindergarten students, referred to as Kindergarten Round-Up, is conducted at each elementary school on April 30, 2009. Parents of new kindergarten students are encouraged to use the on-line pre-enrollment process.  Our web site has information on How to Enroll, including required documents. Information is also available on required immunizations and physical examinations.

The district's Kindergarten Student Expectations may be reviewed.

A parent-friendly version of IUSD Content Standards for Kindergarten students may also be reviewed on-line.

Kindergarten Instructional Day
Kindergarten children attend school for 200 minutes per day. One-half of the time is devoted to literacy and math skills in a reduced class size of approximately 15-17 students. Starting and ending times are determined by each school and vary from morning to afternoon

Kindergarten Philosophy  In the Irvine Unified School District, we believe that the Kindergarten year of school should provide a program which gives each child time to mature intellectually, physically, socially, and emotionally at his own rate and according to his own capacity.

We believe Kindergarten should:

  • help each child develop and maintain a positive self-concept
  • promote positive interpersonal skill
  • enhance physical skills including small muscle coordination
  • provide a learning program that enables each child to work up to his potential
  • assure high levels of success for each child
  • work toward attainment of reading and math readiness skills for each child
  • accommodate the wide range of skill levels attained by entering children

We believe readiness to read:

  • varies noticeably among children of the same age
  • can be determined only with the most careful professional judgment
  • is promoted best by Kindergarten programs designed to accommodate the normal range of abilities
