September/October News
The month of September has come and gone and along with it Back to School Night, our P.T.A. Pledge Drive kick-off, our first all school RIR assembly and a general settling in of staff and students. Our first P.T.A. event is Friday, October 3rd – International Night. The whole community turns out for this night of cultural feasting. Please plan to join us starting at 5:30 on the playground! On October 10th, the Eastshore staff will be participating in a staff development day so there will be no school for students. We will be learning how to continue to move toward becoming a Professional Learning Community, a commitment made by the staff last year. This is a great opportunity for our entire staff to work and learn together. Monday, October 13th, marks a district wide staff development and is another non-student day. That means a four day weekend for students and families in October! Starting Tuesday, October 14th, students will be dismissed early for parent- teacher conferences. Please check our website for details about dismissal for that week. October 15th is Walk to School Day which is sponsored by the Irvine Public Schools Foundation. Staff and students are invited to meet at Woodbridge Village Center and walk to school from there, starting at 7:00 a.m. Please plan to join us at the center or meet us along the way. More information can be found on our website. Eastshore’s annual Halloween Parade will take place on Friday, October 31st. More information will follow about costume guidelines and parade time. October 31st is also a minimum day so students will be released at 1:14 for primary students and 1:25 for upper grade students –a little extra time for goblins to prepare for a night of trick or treating! Our school is still undergoing the final stages of modernization. If you notice something that seems unfinished or hazardous, please let us know. Thanks to several parents we have removed some old handrails and have requested that the volume on our bells be turned down. Another change you may have noticed is that students are required to enter their classrooms from the outside of the building. All classes now have outside doors with the exception of Room 12. Using the outside pathways eliminates interruption of classes going on in the Multi-Purpose Room and the Media Center. We appreciate your assistance in reminding students to use those outside doors. As soon as our new locks are installed these doors will remain locked. Until then, students are not allowed to enter the building without a pass or unless accompanied by their teacher. Drop off and pick up have been running very smoothly this year with the change in starting and ending times for primary and upper grade students. Thank you to everyone for observing the traffic rules, including using the loading zone as a drop off area. Thank you also for respecting the parking lot closure during the school day. Our staff outnumbers our parking spaces and therefore your assistance in parking on the street makes a big difference! Back to School Night was different from years past and we would like your feedback. The staff decided to try something new: to present as grade level teams for a portion of the evening. In order to accommodate everyone, we split the presentations up into 3 evenings. Each grade level developed their own group presentation and then met with parents in their individual classrooms.
As always, we extend our gratitude to the P.T.A. for their support of staff and students. If you haven’t yet, please join our P.T.A and submit your pledge for the year. In these trying financial times, we depend even more on the support of our families – no contribution of time and/or money is too small. Thanks also to the parents manning the Copy Cats team! The staff is delighted with the work you do and we feel so fortunate to be able to depend on you!
Happy Fall!
