Outdoor Science Camp News!
March 3, 2014
We made it! The bus trip was uneventful and relaxing while everyone watched a movie and chewed on gum. After arriving, the students met their instructors and began their orientation of Camp Edwards. The students are out enjoying the sparkling white snow and the crisp, cool air, while trying to avoid melting-snow rivers that are meandering all over camp! We will have another post for you tomorrow!

Today was a beautiful day here at High Trails with cool, crisp weather. Last night the students enjoyed skits by a roaring campfire and went on a night hike. They learned to listen for the nighttime sounds of nature. Today they practiced an emergency drill and then went off in their trail groups. Some groups had adventure day with lessons on rock climbing, archery, and team-building. Shouts of "I'm the king (or queen) of the world!" from the top of the 35-foot tall climbing wall could be heard resounding in the forest. We'll keep you posted on their continuing adventures.

The students' adventures continued yesterday evening with an up close and personal encounter with snakes followed by gazing at Jupiter through telescopes. Today some groups went on a "seven hour" hike to the lake, stopping to learn about our feathered friends and furry critters. The students are enjoying all the candy bars and ice cream we are giving them. Just kidding. They are actually commenting on how yummy the healthy food prepared by the High Trails chefs tastes. The students will be grooving tonight to some line dance music. Memories continue to be made. :)

During our wonderful last day, students received a special visit from their very favorite science teacher, Mr. Evans. All the students went on hikes today and smelled trees and learned how to identify different ones, while Mr. Evans reminded them that they were using qualitative observations! They also learned how to build a shelter during their Outdoor Survival class. The cabin groups are busy preparing their original skits to perform at the final campfire tonight. It should be quite the show! We should be leaving camp around 10:30 and our estimated time of arrival will be posted on this website after we leave. Students will be dismissed as soon as we arrive. Please pick them up promptly. Prepare the hot water and soap!
