All students can easily access information for learning and thinking in the IRC. We encourage the development of a lifelong joy of reading and teach children to use information literacy strategies and critical thinking skills as they access information from our own collection, other sources and the Internet.

CHECK OUT: The IRC welcomes all children, Kindergarten through Sixth grade. It is a place to select books to read for pleasure, a place to access information for learning, and
a place to be challenged and effectively use resources to solve problems.
Primary students come to check out books and listen to a story during scheduled visits. Middle and Upper students have flexible access to the IRC and can come whenever they need or want materials.
Books are checked out for one week and can be easily renewed. Using Destiny, our online card catalog system, our students can access our entire collection from any computer in the school.
LUNCHTIME IRC: This program is available to students in grades 3-6. During lunch recess, they can come to the IRC to read a book, use the computers for learning or take Reading Counts tests or practice keyboarding. It's also the perfect time to look through the shelves and browse through our collection to discover new authors or subjects of interest.
PTA SUPPORT: Thank you, Canyon View PTA, for your financial help! Because of you, we are able to purchase new materials and our collection continues to grow and support our extensive curriculum. Without you, we would not be able to enjoy the variety of materials we can offer our teachers and students.
PARENT VOLUNTEERS: The IRC Parent Volunteers are important partners in the functioning of our program. We thank you for helping with shelving, assisting students... and all the other things you do to make---
THE IRC IS THE PLACE TO BE!

Special Learning Activities
 |
21st CENTURY LEARNING SKILLS: There is a strong learning connection between the IRC and the classroom. The strength of our program is the collaborative effort between the IRC Coordinator and the grade level teams of
teachers. We plan and team teach together to provide students with standards-based instruction that integrates the curriculum with information literacy and critical thinking.
The classroom teacher, IRC coordinator and IRC clerk become
learning facilitators that support and challenge students
through their problem solving activities.
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: Students are presented with an Essential Question (EQ) that will require them to solve a problem by accessing information and using it to answer their specific challenge. Our mission is to teach students to go beyond "data collection and reporting" We want them to access information, analyze it's appropriateness to their EQ and apply the data to help create a solution to their challenge question.
The activities are exciting and students must present their solutions and justify their decisions. Students develop skills that help them be more proficient listeners, thinkers and speakers.

IRC Helping Hands
THE PROGRAM: Wouldn't it be wonderful if we had students who loved to read and shared that enthusiasm with others? Well, we do! Helping Hands are students from the 5th and 6th grades who have been recommended by their teachers and have the ability to work well with others. When selected, these Helping Hands students receive special IRC training and regularly attend meetings with Mrs. Kidder and Mrs. Tyson.
These students assist Kindergarten, First and Second grade students. They help students find new books, take Reading Counts tests and even read stories to small groups!
Helping Hands are wonderful examples of the special students
we have at Canyon View. We are proud of these helpers and
appreciate the service they give.
