Beth Higgins, of Canyon View, has been teaching kindergarten for more than 20 years. She has worked tirelessly to improve kindergarten instruction throughout the district by serving on the Kindergarten Literacy Assessment Task Force, and she effectively implements a number of innovative instructional strategies in her own classroom. Higgins’ math lessons go beyond paper and pencil to include manipulatives and games that help each learner grasp new concepts. She is also a pioneer in writing instruction, challenging her students to take risks and develop advanced skills. |

Lynn Kaminsky, a founding member of the South Lake staff, has been her school’s foundation for developing and fostering strategies and programs to ensure students’ academic, social and emotional success. Even during the summer, Kaminsky doesn’t rest. Since the school’s inception, she has designed, built, coordinated and taught a summer transition program for incoming seventh-graders. Moreover, Kaminsky always finds time to support others. Whether attending the football game of a former student or organizing a community fundraiser to assist someone in need, she continues to empower, uplift and celebrate others. |

A member of the Woodbridge staff for more than 20 years, Joan Malkin currently teaches global studies, honors global studies, AP U.S. government and political science, where she employs critical thinking exercises, writing activities and community service projects to engage students. She is known for using diverse speakers to illustrate issues from multiple perspectives, especially in her political science classes. A recipient of several top honors, Malkin and her ninth-grade classes earned national recognition through the Project Citizen program for researching and proposing options for the El Toro Marine base and for analyzing IUSD’s complex funding issues. |
